美国之音(以下称VOA)的英语节目,按播音速度可分为两种:Standard English (标准英语)和 Special English(特别英语)。

Special English 又名“慢速英语”,是VOA 专为全国际非英语国家初学英语的听众组织的一种简易、标准的英语播送节目。该节目创始于50年代晚期,是VOA 的专家们研讨怎样与国际各地的英语学习者进行外交的产品。它正式开播于1959年10月。其时只面向欧洲和中东,但由于这个节目合适许多国家英语学习者的需求,所以它的播送目标不久就扩大到国际其他区域,并很快在全国际范围内发生了广泛的影响。现在这个节目对欧洲、非洲和拉丁美洲每晚播送一次,对加勒比区域每晚播送一次(星期天在外),对东南亚播送次数最多,每天上午两次,晚上三次。

Words And Their Stories(词语掌故)这一专题节目,旨在向学习英语的听众介绍美国英语中生动有趣的词语和惯用法,并从科学研讨和浅显词源学的视点来解说它们的含义、发生的布景及其在运用过程中的演化状况等。它经过讲故事的方式解说每一个词语。这是VOA Special English中的优异节目之一,是学习美国英语的极好资料。经过收听这一节目,听众不仅能学到娓娓动听的掌故和地道的美国英语,并且能添加美国的社会文化布景常识,前史传统与现状的了解。
